Still Fantasy (依然范特西) (yi ran fan te xi)

Release Date: 5th September 2006

Overall Rating: Rating Stars

The seventh album from Jay Chou, this album is named to after his most famous album Fantasy and represents Jay's insistence of not changing his style and that his music is still very much Fantasy. The album sees Jay collaborating with the famous Taiwanese singer Fei Yu Ching in track 3. The lyrics by Vincent Fang are as wonderful as ever with creative entries such as Track 4 which is based on Chinese medicine. Jay also experiments with some new styles which can be found in track 9 and 10. Jay once again composes all the tracks for the album with his best partner Vincent Fang writing a majority of the lyrics.

1. 夜的第七章 (ye de di qi zhang): 9.5/10
This track reminds me a bit of Yi Fu Zhi Ming and Ye Qu mixed together. Jay's rapping has attitude in this track alike how he did in YFZM. I think that attitude is an essential part of a good rap song and Jay definitely gets points for his rap here. The bg music is also very haunting alike YQ because a lot of piano and violin sounds are used. I also like how Jay had a Penny sing most of the chorus in this song (sounds haunting yet beautiful). Because of this, this track is my fav. track of the whole album and is one of my top fav. songs from Jay.

*A lot of people claim that they do not like how Jay "recycled" an old song but I really do not see why it is a negative thing. His new version is better than the old one so why complain right?

2. 聽媽媽的話 (ting mama de hua): 8/10
The first time I listened to this song, I immediately liked it. This song is very upbeat and I liked how its lyrics and tunes brought me back happy memories back when I was young. This track also reminds me a little of Ye Ye Pao Le Cha and a bit of Jian Dan Ai (alike meldevilish) because of the sweet simplicity found in both of the song's chorus's. Also, I favor the bit where Jay sings about A,B,C's lol. Very cute.

3. 千里之外 (qian li zhi wai): 7.5/10
During my first few listens, I was in love with this track. The chorus was catchy and the duet of Jay and Fei Yu Qing flowed wonderfully. However, after a few more listens, I began to hear too much of Fa Ru Xue in it which brought down my final score for this track. The chorus, music style, and slow rapping of Jay after the chorus made this track too much like FRX.
Other than that, I think it's great that Jay (for the 2nd time) has included a duet in all of his albums. I also thought that their voices were very nicely matched and Jay couldn't have found a better partner to sing this type of song with.

4. 本草綱目 (ben cao gang mu): 7.5/10
I had high hopes for this song but I've got to say that it's downfall was it's chorus which leads to why this track reminds me of Si Mian Chu Ge because it also had a weak chorus. It seems more repetitive and annoying than catchy and tuneful. However, what IS catchy (and creative) is the bg music (the second half made me laugh cuz there were X-File like UFO sounds in the bg lol). I can't believe it's only his first try in experimenting with electronic music (not bad). I hope to see more of this in the future.

5. 退後 (tui hou): 8.5/10
For some reason, I do not see how this track is like Feng at all. Even though Yings, Meldevillish and even Jay himself claimed Tui Hou is a bit like Feng, I still do not see any comparison whatsoever. I thought that all the music in the bg matched very well and was very melodic. I also love Jay's singing and I thought the chorus was catchy and very (sing-a-long-able). This track also reminded me a bit of Ni Ting De Dao and He Se Mao Yi (however, I cannot explain why, it just did -_-"). In fact. this song is one of my favs. in the album (I can't stop singing along to it ^_^).

6. 紅模仿 (hong mo fang): 8/10
Has a very spanish feeling to it (thanks to the beginning music). Reminds me of Hai Dao (music-wise but waaay better). Jay's rapping is normal here, nothing too special. I did wish the chorus was more catchy though but I think the creativity and the bg music makes up for it. I absolutely love the bg beat and the "Aiyah aiyah oh oh" part. One of my more preferred song sof the album.
-----

7. 心雨 (xin yu): 7/10
I think this song is a lot like Feng, Ge Qian and all the other Jay ballads out there. I really do not see anything special about this song (maybe I'll change my opinion after more listens later). I did thought the opening music was very nice though and Jay's singing was great in the chorus. However, that's it.

8. 白色風車 (bai se feng che): 7.5/10
I was actually quite disappointed that Jay would put two songs that are so similar next to each other in the tracklist. Because of this tracklist blunder, it forced me to give this song a lower score. However, this song does have its sweet moments and it's great that Jay wrote the lyrics for this.
-----

9. 迷迭香 (mi die xiang): 8/10
I was thrilled and surprised that Jay had done a song style such as this. I found the music to be very Frank Sinatra-like and I liked it. His voice was very smooth and charming throughout the song and the music was beautiful. It definitely made me want to get up and dance (like how older people do). Very creative and original. Jay's never done a song with a style like this.
-----

10. 菊花台 (ju hua tai): 9.5/10
This is an absolutely wonderful song (and one of my favs.). It is actually through this song that you can see how much Jay's vocal ability has improved through the years. It also shows how much his style has matured and how he can sing songs (in the same levels as Jacky Cheung does now and various other old singers). The song itself is very chinesy and I like the use of the Chinese harp(?) or violin(?). Whatever it is, it sounds nice and matches with Jay's voice. Very calming and soothing. I feel like I'm listening to a fairytale being sung ^_^ Bravo to Jay and I can't wait to see this in the movie.

Overall score: 8/10

I felt that in this album, it was pretty obvious that Jay was trying to show off his creative side. Tracks like 1, 4, 6, 9, and 10 were pretty creative in their own ways, especially 4 and 9 because those music styles are completely new and fresh to Jay. It is also apparant that there aeren't as many catchy tunes in this album as the others but personally, I prefer tracks with more creativity than tracks that have just catchy tunes or lyrics. I was especially impressed with track 1 and 10 because they were both strong tracks to start and end the album with (the way Jay likes it).
However, the albums major setback for me was definitely the track order for tracks 7 and 8 because both of the songs were way too similar. Similar up to the point where sometimes when I'm tired, I can't even tell the difference. More drawbacks was that half of the songs did not have catchy chorus's and half of the tracks didn't really stand out.
Because of this, I couldn't rate the album higher than 8 out of 10. Out of his past albums, I place this in front of 11C and Jay Album, 5th place.

01-Twilight's Chapter Seven(Ye De Di Qi Zhang)
A ghostly song by Jay with a very movie-like music at the beginning. The person who wrote the lyrics for this song is Huang Jun Lang, the person who wrote lyrics for some Jay's song like In the Name of Father(Yi Fu Zhi Ming),Checkmate/General(Jiang Jun) and Orbit(Gui Ji).The lyrics of this song talks about the diary of a detective."I think making this lyrics into a rap is very 'diao',I don't think anyone had thought of this idea before," Thats what he said on the radio during the introduction of this song. The chorus is also sang by Penny, who gave the a ghostly effect with her beautiful voice.
Now about the MV,Jay acts as the detective that is responsible to solve the case of a man's death and the victim had a blue rose on his mouth when he die. When Jay turn back,he saw a youngster with a camera(Devon Song),behind the tree looking at them.
After Jay saw him,Jay,with his assistant(Yuri Chan),chased after tthe youngster and the story goes on,I will not say the ending to spoil the fun.
