Yesterday afternoon, Jay Chou came to Guangzhou to hold a thousand-person fans meeting, it seems like Jay Chou has been in the desert too long after filming "Ci Ling", not only did he request reporters to ask "weird questions", he also answered everything, he also did a few card tricks with the fans and reporters there. He admitted with full certainty that his magic was indeed seemingly "taking over the main", but he still boasted "I'm doing the magic too well, I also thinking about doing a big magic themed concert next year".

Magic is his favourite theme

Besides singing two songs "Where's the Promised Happiness?" and "Fragrance of Rice", he did magic the most. Not only did he stun fans onstage, when he was being interviewed he got a female reporter to be his partner, he did another close distance magic, he made her cry out in amazement.

He also taught the reporter that when you do magic you have to pay attention to the expression of the audience's eyes, "It's just like when you ask an artist a question you look at the expression from his eyes, because your eyes never lie". He said he doesn't need to practise his own magic, because he loves doing it usually. "Next year I plan to do a magic themed concert, even though it will take some time, but it will be especially fun."

Want to go international with movies

Jay Chou is already 30 this year, earlier he wished "he wants to go international by 30". At the event he once again raised this wish, he said the easiest way to realise this dream was through movies. "A lot of people think you have to learn English in order to go international, actually I can do the same with Chinese. Because recently I've discovered an American singing "Chrysanthemum Flower Bed", it felt like a great achievement." He said, "With just singing, not many foreigners will know me, afterwards I found out movies get into other countries a lot faster, a lot of Mandarin films are winning awards at international level, that's why I'm actively on making movies. When they see my movies they'll go listen to my music." He admitted he was "ignoring his proper job" a bit. "Recently I've done a lot of things outside music, for example I fell in love with movies and started making them like mad, recently I've been doing magic too well, I can't stop. The truth is I just want to do my best to show what I've learnt. Everyone can relax, I'm going to put the cart before the horse, everything will still be music, I will still release an album every year."

Question 1

"Recently you've been so busy with your career, you still have time to run businesses? According to reports it's with Jolin Tsai?"

Background: Recently there has been news that Jay Chou and Jolin Tsai are not only still good friends privately but have established a "husband and wife store", it has already begun doing business in June in Shanghai, one is a Italian French restaurant called Mr. J and the other is a dessert house called Mr. Qute.

Answer: It just so happens I wanted to explain this, before I did in fact open a restaurant with a friend, but not with classmate Tsai (Jolin Tsai). Very early on I wanted to run a restaurant, originally I wanted to call them "Mr. J", "Mr. Q" and "Mr. K", first I opened a "Mr. J", when I wanted to open a "Mr. Q", classmate Tsai sang a song called "Mr. Q", it ruined my plan, but friends told me that even if I don't do anything the rumours will still go around, it's been going around for so long anyway, so I continued with it, thus I changed the name to "Mr. Qute", it just to happens it's a dessert house so I thought it was very fitting. I'm also planning on opening a "Mr. K" for Chinese style cuisine. I'm the "Director Chou" of the company but I actually don't manage anything, the most I do is give opinion on artistic related issues. I don't do any promotion or strategy, because doing business is not my strong point.

Question 2

"It's already been 2 years since you participated in the GMAs, this year you've got the most nominations, why are you still not going?"

Background: The GMAs are drawing near, even though Jay Chou got a lot of nominations like Best Mandarin Male Artist, but he said very early on that he won't be attending, because on that day he already has plans to perform in Mainland China. Seeing that not many were attending the GMAs this year, the presenter Tao Zi implied Jay Chou was just in it for the money and had no passion for music.

Answer: I asked my company, my schedule for that day was arranged ages ago, it just so happens I have to perform in Mainland China on the day of the GMAs, the contract has already been signed, I have to go. Of course everyone wants to go to the GMAs, for the last 2 years I haven't participated, one because I wasn't nominated, two because I didn't get nominated for a lot, even if I got nominated for a lot, I would be scared of going, I would be scared I would end up with nothing at the end. I'm thinking, if the GMAs were fair, even if I don't go I would still get an award. When I first entered the industry I looked on the GMAs as being very important, when I had been in the industry for 3 years, I still brought my grandma along to participate, the result was I didn't win anything, I lost a lot of face, at the time I wrote a song called "Maternal Grandmother" to talk about my feelings on this, you can look it up. But slowly I've realised now, it doesn't mean you don't have an artistic life if you don't win awards, the awards ceremony has always been a game. I want to be like Jacky Cheung and not need to go, because he is already god, one day I'll become a god too, I won't need to go register, I won't even need to go watch, I won't have to take notice of these idle talks.

Question 3

"Do you think a lot of male Taiwanese artists are very feminine?"

Background: Recently Feng Xiao Gang said that a lot of Taiwanese male artists were very feminine in a interview, he also said they don't even speak Mandarin properly. Someone asked if he was talking about Jay Chou, because he was accused of pronouncing clearly, Feng Xiao Gang denied: "It's not him, he's very man."

Answer: I also think I'm very man. Actually it's a very casual attitude. Because some people are indeed born very beautiful, so they are thought to be a bit feminine, but we won't say who. I think the male artists in "Kung Fu Dunk" were comparatively a lot less "feminine".

Question 4

"What's your view on newcomers like Gong Mi?"

Background: Recently Gong Mi, a contestant on a show who resembles Cecilia Cheung, revealed on her blog she wanted to take part in Jay Chou's suggested "Mr. J competition", she would be willing to film bed scenes just to be able to work with Jay Chou.

Answer: Who is this girl? Perhaps it's because I've been filming in the desert for too long, I haven't read the news for a while, I don't know her at all. But I think if you're going to make news you have to look at what it's about, I personally hate paparazzi making up rumours the most. Like this kind, it doesn't matter, it's just a kid playing.
